She's 50, she's single and she has big plans for the rest of her life. "Since I turned 50 this year, I decided to run a 50 mile run this year," Sunny Fitzgerald said.

Fitzgerald is one of the 25 million single women over age 45, breaking the myths of aging, single women. AARP conducted a survey of misconceptions surrounding women headed into the later years of their lives.

One myth that tops the list: all single women are desperate to find a mate.

"I definitely disagree with that," Fitzgerald said. "I'm pretty content and happy with my life."

Another common myth; older women are clueless about finances.

"I disagree with that as well," she said. "I picked up investing right after my husband died."

Another misconception: after retirement, older women slow down.

"I think the one word to describe being a woman 50 and older today and single, is possibilities," said Karen Reyes of AARP the magazine.

According to the survey, older single women are finding opportunities to do what they want as they age, and women like Sunny Fitzgerald are running away with them.
