Exit polls show unmarried women made up about 28 percent of Maryland voters during Tuesday's primary elections, prompting a single women voting advocacy group to herald what they say is a historic increase in participation.
"In the 2008 elections, we've not only seen unmarried women participate in high numbers, but also represent a large percentage of the youth vote as well," said Page Gardner, president of Women's Voices Women Vote, a non-profit, non-partisan advocacy group.
The group promotes voting registration and participation among single women, who historically are 9 percent less likely to register to vote than married women, and who are 13 percent less likely to vote once they are registered, said Sarah Johnson, communications director for the group.
