Voter Registration FAQ

WVWV and its VPC successfully register hundreds of thousands of voters across the country
The VPC, a project of Women Voices Women Vote, works to encourage unmarried women and other under- represented women to register to vote. WVWV and the VPC have registered over 700,000 Americans in 47 states. Women’s Voices. Women Vote is a 501c3, non-profit, non-partisan organization created to activate unmarried women and under-represented women to participate in their government and in our democracy. WVWV has been in operation since 2004, first as a project of the Tides Center and then as its own 501c(3).

List development
WVWV conducts a highly sophisticated matching process when developing lists. We match a Voting Age Population list purchased from a nationally recognized vendor to your state’s list of registered voters. Although we use the most advanced methods of matching and cleaning, no list building process is 100 percent accurate.

WVWV and the VPC target unregistered voters
Using a sophisticated matching process, WVWV compares an official voter file from your state to a purchased VAP list. WVWV sends voter registration forms to individuals who appear on the VAP list, but not the state voter file. The purchased VAP list we use is compiled from, and regularly updated by, thousands of public sources. The voter file is an official list maintained by the state or county that indicates which citizens are currently registered to vote in that state. WVWV’s computer matching process examines and compares the following information when available: (1) name (first, middle, last, suffix); (2) birth date or birth year; (3) gender; (4) address (street, city, state, zip); (5) county; (6) phone number; (7) e-mail address.

Removal from our list
As no list process is perfect, our mail designed for unregistered individuals may mistakenly be sent to a registered voter. Because it is our intention to only communicate with unregistered citizens, we offer three methods for removal from our lists. First, a convenient online form is available at: http://www.voterparticipationcenter.org/unsubscribe.php. Second, the inside panel of the voter registration form contains a 9-digit number that can be emailed to info@voterparticipationcenter.org. Third, the WVWV office can be contacted directly at 202-659-9570. If someone is not a registered voter, but would prefer to no longer receive mail from WVWV or the Voter Participation Center, they also may use any of these methods to remove themselves from the mailing list.

WVWV and the VPC reach citizens to update their registration
We use the U.S. Postal System’s National Change of Address Registry. If a resident has moved from the address where they were previously registered to vote, they may need to or want to re-register with their new address to participate in upcoming elections.

Information is safe
The voter registration forms are not opened by WVWV staff. The forms are either mailed directly to voting officials or delivered directly to voting officials without ever being opened.

State requirement of Social Security Number
For identification purposes, some states require an entire Social Security Number, while other states only require the last four digits. Each application identifies state requirements in “Box 6” of the Special Instructions. WVWV and the VPC do not ever handle registration forms. They are sent directly to your appropriate state agency.
